Jamie Frances Palm, Lt. Col. USAF Retired, 96, of Sunrise Beach, passed away January 30, 2010. She was born to James William and Bertha Burnett (Tuttle) Palm on March 19, 1913 in Round Rock, Texas.
Ms. Palm completed nurses training at John Seely Hospital in Galveston in 1936. She worked in New York at St. Luke’s Hospital as a registered nurse. In 1940, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was stationed in Keflavik, Iceland when WWII began. In 1945, she transferred to the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps and served on a medical team in Germany during the Nuremberg Trials. During the Korean Conflict, she completed flight school and was assigned as a flight nurse caring for the wounded being transported between Korea and Japan. Following her flight nursing stint, she was assigned to an Air Force Hospital in the U.S. in her specialty as a psychiatric nurse. In this capacity, many troubled corpsmen were assigned to her ward for support. Under her skilled guidance, these young men learned valuable coping skills to lead exemplary and productive lives.
She completed a hospital administration course and became a chief nurse in her next several assignments at Air Force hospitals. She retired from Bergstrom Air Force Base in 1966 with the rank of Lt. Col. and lived in Austin. In 1980, she moved to Sunrise Beach Village in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
Since retirement she was a member and officer in Altrusa International Inc. in Austin. She was a charter member of and volunteer fundraiser for the Hill Country Humane Society/SPCA and its Christ-Yoder Animal Shelter/Adoption Center (CYASAC). For many years she wrote a newspaper column for local weekly papers about the Sunrise Beach Village community activities. Was a member of the Military Officer’s Association of America (MOAA), the SRBVFD Ladies Auxiliary, the Kingsland Community Church serving on the Board and very active in its Women’s Christian Organization (WCO). Jamie was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Neighborhood Watch.
She loved to read, listen to classical music, attend plays at the Hill Country Community Theater (HCCT), eat chocolate, travel, meet new people, and attend the University of Texas Women’s basketball games.
She is preceded in deaths by her mother, father, uncle, Thomas Tuttle.
She is survived by her long time friend, Violet Jimenez and her name sake Jamie White and husband Roger.
