Tony David Sherman

Tony David (Schacherl) Sherman died July 11, 2010. He leaves behind a loving and devoted family. Born May 2, 1919, in Moulton, Texas to John and Theresa Schacherl, he moved to San Angelo in 1937 where he was employed by Cecil Walton Motor Co. Drafted on January 13, 1941, he served his country honorably in Company A, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, 5th Army. After being stationed at Camp Bowie, Brownwood; Camp Blanding, Florida; and Camp Edwards, Massachusetts; he was assigned to amphibious training and guarding & processing German prisioners of war from General Rommel’s Afrika Corp in Oran and Arzew in North Africa. Beginning September 7, 1943, he took part in the Italy invasion at Salerno. In January of 1944, he was captured by German forces at the Rapido River Crossing in the little town of Sant’ Angelo, Italy. He was held as a prisoner of war in Stalag IIB, close to Poland; Stalag IIIB at Frankfurt on the Oder River; and Stalag IVB near Berlin for one and one-half years until 1945 when he was liberated by the Russian army. He recovered in a hospital in Bristol, England followed by Stark General Hospital in Charleston, S. C. and Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge, American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, Federal Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged at Camp Fannin, Tyler, TX on November 11, 1945. Tony married Alice Marie Kohutek on March 5, 1946. He worked as a parts manager and retired from Lynn Alexander Motor Co. in September 1986. He had opened Sherman’s Child Care with his wife Alice in 1979 and retired from there in May of 1999. Tony is survived by his son, Ronald John Sherman and wife, Carole of Norman, OK, and his daughter, Janis Elizabeth Fenwick Fox and husband Robert of Houston, TX. He has ten grandchildren: Warren Sherman; Scott Sherman and wife Jody; Mandy Schroeder and husband Michael; Alyssa Gonzales and husband Heath; Allison Sherman; Morgan Sherman; Amy Fenwick and Ynema Mangum; Jeffrey Fenwick; Stephanie Mitchell and husband Buddy; and Victoria Fox. He has eight great-grandchildren: Brittney Schroeder, Brooklynn Schroeder, Bailey Garza, Cash Gonzales, Emily Sherman, Tyler Sherman, Andrew Sherman Burke, and Sam Mangum. He is also survived by his sister, Della Braden and husband David; brother-in-law Robert Kohutek and wife Betty; and sister-in-law Doris Kohutek as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; his parents; brothers, Joe Schacherl, Johnny Schacherl, Otto Schacherl, Edwin Schacherl; sisters, Mary Kazmir, Tillie Ducho, Annie Goetz, and Emma Schacherl; and son-in-law, Floyd Fenwick. Tony was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church since 1961. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1948, a past Grand Knight and life member of the 3rd and 4th Degrees. He was a member of the Elks Lodge since 1961 serving in various positions including Trustee, Tiler and Inner Guard. He was a member of the American Ex-P.O.W. Association, the San Antonio Chapter of the 36th Division Association and the Disabled American Veterans. To his family and friends Poppa was definitely a hero. Thanks for the memories… Rosary will be at Holy Angels Catholic Church Chapel at 7:00 p.m. Friday July 16th. The Memorial Mass will also be held at Holy Angels at Noon on Saturday July 17th followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. The family invites everyone back to Holy Angels’ parish hall for a celebration of life and refreshments. Memorials may be made to West Texas Boys Ranch, the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
